Beach betters score on day 2 of the 2006 USA Youth Champs
 
GREENSBORO -Curtis Beach defended his intermediate boys decathlon title on 
day two of the 2006 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at 
the Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T State University.
 
The Championships are a national competition with entry based upon qualifying 
standards for each event and have the same age divisions as the USATF Junior 
Olympic program. Bantam (10 and under), Midget (11-12), Youth (13-14), Intermediate 
(15-16) and Young Men/Women (17-18). In addition, this year's meet will serve as 
one of the selection pool competitions for the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships 
in Ostrava,Czech Republic.
 
2005 Youth Outdoor Track & Field Intermediate decathlon champion Curtis Beach of 
Albuquerque, N.M. defended his title and improved his score by over 1,000 points. 
Beach's winning score of 6,137 points bettered his 2005 score of 4,996 points.
 
The Gazelle Running Club started the day with an impressive victory in the Midget 
Girls 4x800 meter relay. "We were really nervous," said the team, "this is the 
first time we have ever run this event." The Gazelle's won the race with a time 
of 9 minutes 53.90 seconds.
 
The Midget Boys 4x800m was lead by the Titans Track Club in a time of 9 minutes 20.82 
seconds. The time broke the Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet record by 
almost 10 seconds. The previous record of 9:30.49 was set in 1997 by the West Valley 
Eagles. The Titans were pushed to the victory by the Southern California Running 
Cougars who finished second in 9:20.83.
 
Conner McCullough, of West Hills, Calif., dominated the Intermediate Boys hammer 
competition. His toss of 62.36 meters/204 feet 7 inches beat the second place toss 
of 38.56m/126-06 by Joe Riccio. "It was close but it is not what I could have done," 
said McCullough.
 
Emily Green, of Columbus Elite won the Young Women's hammer competition with a toss 
of 30.76 meters/100 feet 11 inches.
 
Ryan Loughney of Woodbourne, N.Y. won the Young Men's hammer title with a distance 
of 55.87meters/183 feet 3 inches. "I'm happy I won, but I'm not happy with my 
performance. After this I plan to compete at the Junior Olympics and the Empire 
State Games," said Loughney.
 
In the heptathlon events, Victoria Dunlap and Shakeia Pinnick won their respective 
age group divisions. Dunlap of the Continental T-Belle's finished with 4,520 points 
winning the Young Women's division as Pinnick of Aurora Flyer's Track club scored 
4,326 points to win the Intermediate Girls division.
