2006 World Junior (Under 20 born 1987 or later) Men's 110m Hurdles (99 cm) Preview - prepared 7/10/06
Event Preview - France's Garfield Darien was a seventh place finalist in the 2004 World Junior Championships, run at the 1.07m hurdle height, with a 13.73 2005 best over those height barriers, and he was the 2005 European Junior Champ at 13.77 (-2.4 mps wind). The runner-up in last year's European Junior meet, Greece's Konstadinos Douvalidis was 13.78 (1.07m hurdles) last year with a 13.99 into the wind (-2.4 mps) for his silver medal behind Darien last summer in that area title meet. Leading the world at the 99 cm hurdles for 2006 are the 1-2 finishers from from the American qualifying meet, with US High-Schooler, Cordera Jenkins, the World Youth Champ last summer (13.35 91.4 cm barriers), who took the US title run at 13.44 (99cm). A high-schooler from Dickinson, Texas, Jenkins proved his international mettle with a good series of races in Marrakech on his way to the Youth title last year, and mixed it up nicely with elders at the US Junior Championships with his win there. Close behind at the US title contest was Dennis Martin at 13.46 (99 cm), a first year Collegian at the University of Florida, where he had a 14.20 best over the 1.07m (42") barriers and competed for his school's squad all the way to the US University championships in the 4x100 relay (40.00). Samuel Coco-Viloin (France) was a fine 13.49 at the DLV meet in Germany in early July of this year to follow the Americans on the yearly list (he had a 2005 1.07m best of 14.01 in the way of time comparisons). Erik Balnuweit (Germany) was 14.00 for the 1.07m barriers in the DLV Meet (know this gets confusing) as that competition ran both height barrier contests. Ryan Brathwaite (Barbados) was second to Cordera Jenkins in the 2005 World Youth Meet last summer over the 91.4 hurdles at 13.44 with a 13.34 2005 world youth leader along the way in qualifying there. Hong Xiaofeng (China), the National Junior Champ there at 13.72 (99 cm hurdles), Lehann Fourie (South Africa) winner of his nation's Junior title run at 13.74 (99 cm) at altitude, 2005 World Youth High Hurdles third placer Gianni Frankis (Great Britain) 13.76 (2006 99 cm) and 13.48 (91.4 2005 over lower barriers), Huang Hao (China) 14.05 (1.07m), Yan Xu (China) 14.07 (1.07m), Paul Dittmer 14.08 (1.07m), and Jhonathan Davis (Venezuela) 14.10 (1.07m) look like others who can challenge for a finals spot.
