Event Preview -
Wow! What an event with quality and depth that should make a finals spot pretty
tough to earn! 2004 World Junior silver medalist Remaldo Rose (Jamaica)
raced 10.34 in that pressure-packed finals run, with a 10.29 (and 10.30
backup) from the 2006 season. He should continue the Jamaican tradition
of sprinting excellence here! US
Champ Willie Perry (Univ Florida) was 10.12 (=#18 AT World Jr, #11
US AT Jr) in taking the National Junior title and
has at least five
10.35's or better this spring. Perry was a solid third in
the very, very competitive Southeastern Conference collegiate finals
100m and fourth
in the
200m as a first
year athlete at that level. His talent is honed on a very solid
year of tough competition against athletes a couple years his elder!
Brit Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was the 2005 World Youth Champ
(10.35), with teammate Alex Nelson joining in the blasting of the
rest of
that field (3rd 10.55) with a 10.36 silver medal race in Marrakech
last summer. Aikines-Aryeetey was 10.39 to win the DLV Junior-Gala
in Germany July 8th, with fellow-Brit Wade Bennett-Jackson 10.40
for second there (and 10.34 in 2005 as a best last year). Canadian
Justyn Warner burst forth last year for a runner-up 10.29 in the
Junior Pan American meet last summer, with a solid first year of
US collegiate sprinting at Texas Christian University, where he was
10.42 wind legal (10.35w) and an All-American in the 4x100 meter
relay and Conference Indoor 60m Champ. Yongyi Wen (China) is
a legit local medal threat, with a 10.30 seasonal best (and 10.42
back up) in the 2006 Asia Grand Prix series, with a recent 10.47
into a -2.2 mps wind in the National Junior Champs. US
runner-up, Gordon McKenzie was 10.30 in the qualifying contest there,
with a 10.29w seasonal best and fine US collegiate season (University
of Kentucky) in the same Southeastern conference that Willie Perry
competes in. Caribbean stars Keston Bledman (Trinidad) 10.32
this season, was third in the World Youth Meet last summer, with
Yohan Blake (Jamaica) 10.34 this campaign and 10.48 to win the National
Junior title in Remaldo Rose's absence. We think we have
probably included more people above then there are lanes in the Finals,
so you know what kind of an event it will be as we weave through
qualifying here!! As we started with, wow!!
