Jake Schmidt (UC Berkeley/Redwood HS, Larkspur) will run for the US
in the World Junior Meet over the 10k distance!

Event Preview -
Eighteen year old Ibrahim Jeylan of Ethiopia may wish a "dress rehersal" for his medal run at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (also scheduled for mid-August), with the world's #2 (at any level) 10,000m runner at 27:15.90 currently a minute ahead of the pack.  He has shown impressive improvement since a runner-up effort in last year's World Youth 3000m (8:04.21) and a fifth in the World Junior Cross Country Championships this past spring.
Kenya leads here with Daniel Gitau (28:17.15) from this May, with Japheth Ng'ojoy from that nation 28:38.73 from late March in the United States.  Solomon Molla (Ethiopia) was 28:35.27 last year, with an eighth place in the 2005 World Junior Cross Country meet.  Japan has a good group to draw from, with Tsuyoshi Ugachi (28:48.30) and 24th form the Junior World Cross-Country championships this year, Akihiro Matsumoto (29:00.82), and Takahiro Mori (29:00.76).  China's Ren Longyun was 28:51.73 last year for ninth in his nation's National Games, with Mohamed Elbendir (Spain) 29:15.04 this July (and a 13:44.05 5k from June).
