2007 IAAF WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

 

At Ostrava, Czech Republic, July 11-15

 

 

The United States is the two-time defending champion having won the team title in

Sherbrooke, Canada in 2003 and in Marrakesh, Morocco in 2005. The U.S. team will be selected in May.

 

In order to qualify you must:  1) have been born in 1990, 1991 or 1992; 2) attended one of three national

meets in 2006 (USA National Junior Championships, USA National Youth Championships or USA

National Junior Olympics); and 3) meet a specific standard between January 1, 2006 and June, 2007.

 

In order to score in Ostrava you must make the finals and place in the top eight. At this time 18 girls

and 17 boys (maximum of 2 per event) have performed at a level that would have scored in 2005

(2003 for girl’s shot put and discus). Certain assumptions have been made in events where there

is a difference in weights and hurdles used at WYC and the U.S.

 

So who are the leading athletes who have met the three requirements and how are they doing in 2007?

 

Based and the information gathered below (and is it a list that is in flux), a few individual have

begun to stand out. In the sprints, high qualify performances have been turned in by Jeremy

Rankin of Overland (Aurora, Co.), 10.33 and 21.01 two weeks ago and Ashton Purvis of St.

Elizabeth (Oakland, Ca.), 11.40 and 23.50, last weekend. Earlier Jordan Hasay of Mission

College Prep (San Luis Obispo, Ca.) set national high school girls federation record of 4:39.13

for 1,600 meters and Conor McCullough of Chaminade (Mission Hills, Ca.) tossed the 5-kilo

men’s hammer 244-2 to rank third in the world this year.
