BEAVERTON, Ore. (June 28, 2007) -- Nike Inc. today has announced details covering the format for the inaugural NTN Regional Championships series, a collection of seven cross-country meets being contested at various sites throughout the nation on three successive weekends in November.
The Regional Championships will serve as qualifiers into the fourth annual Nike Team Nationals event, scheduled for Saturday, December 1st at Portland Meadows racing facility. Additional races will be placed on the meet schedule at each venue, with squads afforded the opportunity to compete in a uniquely festive atmosphere and within various race classifications.
"This is what we originally envisioned for Nike Team Nationals," said NTN co-founder John Truax of Nike. "The notion of having these exciting championship level team meets all across the country and giving thousands of kids a chance to participate in these firsthand is a goal and a dream fulfilled."
All seven regionals will be contested on high-quality courses, with several of the layouts having been previously used in national, regional or state championship competition at both the collegiate and high school levels. In addition, several of the regions will play host to pre-regional meets during the fall, allowing runners the chance to compete on the very same courses to be used at the regional championships. More details on pre-regional meets will be forthcoming.
The premier race at each venue will be the Regional Championship Division race, a seeded competition which will pit the region's top 25-35 club teams together in a quest for distance-running excellence.
Below are more specific details on the dates, locations, and qualifying procedures for the Regional Championship meets:
Saturday, November 10, 2007 -- Northwest Region Championship @ Eagle Island State Park, Boise, ID
Heartland Region Championship @ Yanktons Trail Park, Sioux Falls, SD
Midwest Region Championship @ LaVern Gibson Course, Terre Haute, IN
Saturday, November 17, 2007 -- Southwest Region Championship @ Kiwanis Park, Tempe, AZ
South Region Championship @ Bear Creek Park Complex, The Woodlands, TX
Saturday, November 24, 2007 -- Southeast Region Championship @ Veterans Park @ Hollydale Road, Hoover, AL
Northeast Region Championship @ Bowdoin Park, Wappingers Falls, NY
Each regional championship meet will be comprised of 10 races (5 for boys and 5 for girls; see tables below for specifics). Eligibility into the Regional Division Championship will be based on rankings and voting tallies from NTN Rankings Committee members as well as the Regional Editor and the Regional Meet Director. Those receiving the most voting points in the final weeks before the meet will be granted registration priority for the remaining available spots. For the non-Regional Division Championship races, priortity will be based solely on registering in time before the race fields are full.
For the Regional Division Championship, eligibility for the first 15 teams berths will be determined by the NTN Rankings Committee, based on the weekly Top 10 regional rankings and a new "Others To Watch" category to be employed in 2007 as those rankings coincide with the distribution schedule outlined in the first chart below. Berths 16 and beyond will be determined in a weighted scoring system where voting members will rank to 30 teams, with each first-place vote worth 30 points, each 2nd-place vote worth 29 points and so on. Those teams with the most voting points will receive priority registration rights until the fields are full.
More detailed NTN Regional Championships information regarding time schedules, awards, entry fees, etc. will be posted at a future date at http://www.niketeamnationals.com

About Nike Team Nationals
The Nike Team Nationals is a part of the larger Nike Nationals championship series which includes the Nike Outdoor Nationals and Nike Indoor Nationals. The series of events was established in 2004 to help strengthen the national circuit for high school cross country and track and field competition.
Following in the tradition of European cross country meets, the event will again feature a multiple loop race course with man-made obstacles built on the inside of the horse race track. Spectators will be able to enjoy a continuous live view of the race from the venue’s enclosed 3,000-seat grandstand. Again this year the Nike Team Nationals event is providing coaches handheld computer devices, utilizing FinishLynx tracking technology (created specifically for Nike Team Nationals), to see team scores posted to a live leader board every kilometer. The technology was first introduced in the race's inaugural year and provides instant feedback on a team's position in the race allowing coaches to adjust strategy in the midst of the event. In addition to real-time race tracking, event data is then transferred live to dyestat.com and to www.niketeamnationals.com following the completion of the race so spectators, participants and coach can replay the race and see how select teams and/or individuals ran.
